Who we are
A new chapter in oncology research
Oncology Consultants España was established in Madrid in 2026 to develop a dedicated clinic for early-phase oncology clinical research. The organization brings together experienced Spanish investigators, international drug-development expertise and the infrastructure needed to conduct complex oncology early-phase studies.
Backed by more than four decades of oncology and clinical research experience at Oncology Consultants in the United States, and by P1, now P1 Pratia Oncology, OC España is establishing in Madrid its first unit outside the US and developing its own clinical and scientific program.

Dra. Begoña de las Heras García

Dr. de las Heras is a board-certified medical oncologist from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, with more than 25 years of national and international experience in clinical oncology and clinical research.

Dr. de las Heras is a board-certified medical oncologist from the Autonomous University of Madrid, Spain, with more than 25 years of national and international experience in clinical oncology and clinical research, spanning Phase I–III trials in various solid tumors and hematological malignancies. Her expertise focuses on early oncology drug development, including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy—including vaccines—as well as cell and gene therapies.
Throughout her career in early oncology drug development, Dr. de las Heras has contributed to multiple first-in-human clinical trials, driving the transition of molecules from the preclinical stage to the start of their clinical development. She has also built a global network of sites with expertise in early oncology development across the five continents. Dr. de las Heras has made significant contributions to multiple Investigational New Drug (IND) applications to health authorities, as well as to orphan drug designations and one marketing authorization application (NDA).
Dr. de las Heras is the author and/or co-author of more than 20 oncology publications, eight book chapters and two patent applications related to her contributions to clinical trials. Dr. de las Heras is a member of the American, European and Spanish Societies of Medical Oncology.

Dr. Ponce is a medical oncologist and Head of Therapeutic Innovation and Precision Medicine at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid.

Dr. Ponce is a medical oncologist and Head of Therapeutic Innovation and Precision Medicine at Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid. Dr. Ponce has served as principal investigator in more than 250 phase I–III clinical trials, with a particular focus on early drug development, precision oncology and lung cancer. Dr. Ponce's experience spans first-in-human studies, biomarker-driven trials and international randomised studies, combining clinical investigation with translational research.
Dr. Ponce obtained his medical degree from the University of Navarra, completed specialist training in Medical Oncology at Hospital Universitario de Canarias, and earned a Master's degree in Molecular Oncology at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO). At Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Dr. Ponce coordinated the Early Phase Unit and established the molecular tumour board before joining Gustave Roussy in France in 2020. There, he headed the Department of Therapeutic Innovation and Early Trials (DITEP), directed the Precision Medicine Program, and subsequently served as Deputy Director of Clinical Research. He returned to Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in 2025 and also serves as Scientific Coordinator of Fundación OncoSur.
Dr. Ponce's publications include clinical trials of novel anticancer therapies and studies of molecular biomarkers and treatment resistance. His work focuses on translating biological insights into clinical trials and expanding patients' access to investigational treatments.
Dr. Ponce is now joining the OC España team, contributing his experience in early drug development and precision oncology.

OC España specializes in early-phase oncology clinical trials, including first-in-human, Phase I, Phase I/II and Phase II “Proof of Concept” studies.

The appropriate dose and treatment schedule for further development.

How a drug is distributed in the body and how it acts on its molecular marker.

Initial results on the activity of the investigational drug, which will guide the next phases of its clinical development.
Research platform
Built for Early-Phase Oncology
OC España is being developed to support the operational and scientific requirements of complex early-phase oncology studies, working in collaboration with P1 Pratia Oncology and its broader international clinical research infrastructure.
The platform offers comprehensive support to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, CROs and investigators throughout the clinical development of the molecule, from study start-up through execution.
Our history
Built on decades of oncology and research experience
Oncology Consultants was founded in Houston in 1982 by Dr. Luis Campos and has developed more than four decades of experience in community oncology and clinical research. Dr. Campos' connection to Madrid also extends back more than 25 years through his participation in the transformation of the former Navy Hospital into the current MD Anderson oncology center in Madrid.
Clinical research at Oncology Consultants expanded significantly under Dr. Julio Peguero, who joined the practice in 2013 and went on to build an extensive early-phase oncology research program. Dr. Peguero later founded P1, now P1 Pratia Oncology, extending that experience through a broader international research network.
Today, that history comes together with experienced local leadership in Madrid through Oncology Consultants España.
